ARTHUR CARLOS DE BARROS BASTO. The hundredth issue of "Halapid" is an event which deserves special commemo- ration. Far about 15 chequered and eventful years this journal has appeared in spíte of difficulties that at times seemed insuperable. Undaunted by all obstacles, however, the gallant Editor has carried on his self-imposed task with a tenacity of purpose which has marked the whole of his Jewish public life. He has borne the whole brunt of editing this modest organ of the Marranos in Portugal-a periodical unique in Jewish journalism-and has been likewise its main, and often its sale, contributor. Its pages contain valuable material for the history of the Jews in Portugal, but the Jewish historian will also find in it most interesting facts relating to the latter-day Jewish Revival in that country. "Am Israel Hai ("The Jewish People Lives!") is the latest declaration that has made its round throughout the world-wide Jewish Diaspora, and we may now say truly that among the Remnant of Israel in Sepharad that escaped the terrors of the Inquisition and the corroding influences of centuries, there, too, Israel lives. When in 1909 I wrot my "History of the Jews" (which has been made available to the Marranos in a Portuguese translation), I then recorded that there was no longer any trace of the former Jews and Judaism in Spain and Portugal. In 1939, when I issued the 7th edition of that work, I was, happily, able to refer to the resurrecion of Judaism in that part. There was, indeed, only a slight flicker of light that shone in the Drevailing darkness, but this NER TAMID (Perpetual Light) had been lovingly tended these many years by the gallant Captain, Who, as a true Israelite, worthy of his Jewish ancestors, has remained faithful at his post. No obloquy, not even the defection of friends, could move him to forsake the faith that is in him. May he long be spared in strength an in good heart to keep the torch of Judaism alight and aloft.
